A Walk to Remember | Four-legged friends bring a Tar Heel couple together...and to the Holy City

Meredith Morgan & Gary Albertson

Pets really can bring people together. Take Meredith Morgan and Gary Albertson, for instance, who met while walking their dogs near where they live in Raleigh, North Carolina. Shy of two years later, Gary surprised Meredith with a trip to “her favorite city in the world,” she says, and the couple found themselves on a weekend filled with great food, ghost tours, and sightseeing. Along the way, Gary thought a walk along White Point Garden on the Battery with their ailing Bernese mountain dog, Aspen, was a grand idea. “Aspen,” explains Meredith, “had cancer and Gary knew he probably wouldn’t make it to our wedding, so he wanted him to be a huge part of the proposal.” After Gary popped the question (and Meredith answered affirmatively), the three of them climbed into a private carriage and soaked up more of the city. “It was perfect,” says Meredith, who says she treasures the images that a tourist kindly (and covertly) snapped and shared of the whole affair. A few months later, to keep the perfect rolling, the two animal-adoring and scuba-loving Tarheels booked the SC Aquarium for their Big Day and returned to town for an utterly festive night with friends and family.
