Bright Ideas | Go big on color with pro tips and inspiration
The classic white, greenery, and blush motif certainly has its place, but ask any wedding pro and they’ll all agree that your wedding should be designed around your own unique personality and story as a couple. Which is why, for some, color can be a great way to express yourself. That was the case for photographer Dana Cubbage and planner Lillie Simpson of Sarah Lillie Design, who teamed up for this fabulously vibrant inspiration shoot. “I love, love, love color,” says Dana, who created this for her new website. “I wanted this shoot to showcase all of the elements I love when it comes to wedding design—over-the-top florals, lots of bright colors, fun patterns, and unexpected design elements.” Set against Lowndes Grove’s crisp white backdrop, Festoon Charleston played up the color with ranunculus, anemones, garden roses, and pin cushion protea, among other festive blooms. For the tablescape, Lillie chose a geometric patterned linen from Stradley Davidson to build the look around and pulled in her own starburst napkin rings she’s been just waiting for an excuse to use. It’s a cheerful look for the happiest of days.

Pro Tips for Playing Up the Color

  1. do find one item you are obsessed with, whether it’s a linen, a charger, or a bold chair and let that be the driving force for your design.
  2. don’t mix warm and cool colors. Picking a palette that leans one way will result in a more cohesive look.
  3. do keep your backdrop neutral when using bright colors and patterns. Here, the clear acrylic chairs are an elegant choice that doesn’t detract from the brilliant tablescape.
  4. don’t rely on Pinterest. That’s where you’ll find things that have already been done. But do create your own mood board, so you can see everything visually together.
  5. do nvest in good florals. It’s worth it for the photos.
  6. don’t be afraid of color. It’s a great way to make your wedding stand out and a good planner can help.
