“Brunch is practically a cultural institution where we live,” says Alyssa Lapan. “Some of our happiest weekends revolve around long brunches with friends.” That’s how she and fiancé Joseph Rice landed on a brunch wedding at Magnolia Plantation & Gardens last June, prompted by Joe’s Lowcountry roots. The D.C. residents enlisted Alicia Brewer of Duvall to execute all moving parts of their 60-person destination wedding, including planning, design, flowers, and catering.

As the couple got engaged on a New Zealand trip that included a tour of the Lord of the Rings Hobbiton set, subtle elements from the film were woven into the day. Following passed bites of fried chicken and waffles, avocado toast, and cinnamon rolls, food stations served up sweet and savory choices, including an attended grits bar; a gourmet salad bar; a brunch array with biscuits, quiches, granola, yogurt, and fruit; and a display of miniature sweets.
