Laura Catherine Deskin may have swiped right on Naval officer and Charleston newcomer Henry Callicott Self II, but she couldn’t work up the courage to actually go on a date. A senior at the College of Charleston at the time in 2017, Laura was apprehensive about Bumble and dating apps in general. Two months later, she
gave in and found Henry “easy to talk to, so sweet, and really really funny,” she says. From the start, they knew they shared something special. But it wasn’t until their engagement years later that they realized they knew they were soulmates all along.

As a Navy submariner, Henry’s deployment schedule left most of the wedding prepwork to Laura, who brought in The Coordination Company for planning and design support. Based on her desire for a romantic, warm look, they landed on a modern take on a ’70s color palette, with greens, oranges, and rattan elements. Florist Rosebay Floral Co. brought in glowing candles across every table at the reception, by which time the couple had slipped into party dress. And bringing their story full circle, bumble bees turned up in the small details, including in the gold wax stamps on the ceremony programs and escort board. It was a sublime scene and a buzzing good time.

Top Tips

• Find your colors. The couple’s planner, Kate Bogner of The Coordination Company, tells clients who are unsure about a palette to look around their home and closets to find a color scheme that feels like them. “Do they see a trend? Maybe they see lots of warm tones, cool tones, or maybe mostly neutrals?

• Do it up with candles. Lots of glowing candlelight can really make a statement by creating a romantic ambiance and for relatively little cost.

• Personalize it. In a play off of the Bumble dating app through which Laura and Henry met, they incorporated bumble bee wax stamps on the ceremony program and escort board.
