Flower Child | A colorful bride from Los Angeles shares how she broke out of the blush-hued, monochromatic box with a little help from Mother Nature

“Whenever anyone asked what my colors were,” says Elizabeth (Liz) Mitchell Kadar, “I’d answer, ‘Just a field of wildflowers.’ My whole thing with our wedding was that I wanted no set color palette.” If you’re in the same boat, Liz, who writes for Brides.com and picked Charleston for her October 9, 2015 wedding to Kenny Kadar after interviewing Pure Luxe Bride’s Francesca DiSalvo Folmer for a story, says to pace yourself.

“Our home,” says the bride, “is full of every color under the sun, but it’s done in a very minimalist, pleasing way as opposed to being overwhelming.” With the Legare Waring House’s oak allée as the verdant backdrop, she knew that tossing in touches of confetti-like color by way of flowers was the way to go. Here are her guideposts for a similarly stunning effect.

INGENIOUS IDEAS

Hire pros you sync with stylistically. Give them some guidance on your aesthetic, then let them do their thing, says Liz.

Choose what’s going to star, then tone down the rest. For the wedding party’s look, the gals’ bouquets were intended to stand out, so dresses were neutral and crowns subtle.

Go wild. “The problem with most floral arbors,” says Liz, “is that the flowers are too ‘perfect.’ Mimic how you find them in nature, which is a little bit wild and unruly.”

Be original. Rather than create a carbon copy of another wedding, pick and choose elements from various sources that are “you.”

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT TIP
Can’t honeymoon right after the wedding? Liz and Kenny stayed in Charleston four extra days after their ceremony for a “mini moon” before flying back home to Los Angeles.
