Both from the Lowcountry, Eliza Metts and Will Monts spent college summers working at the same Christian summer camp. They met in 2017, were close friends by 2019, and within two years, love blossomed. Will designed an engagement ring inspired by an 1860s antique family ring and popped the question under a jasmine arch on Stoll’s Alley, a favorite walking route. “I dreamed of a cross between Meg’s joyful nuptials in Greta Gerwig’s 2019 Little Women and the classic The Secret Garden,” says Eliza. Getting married at their church, St. Mary of the Annunciation, was a must, and in seeking a reception venue within walking distance, they found 62 Broad Street. The circa-1800 venue was the perfect size for their 110 guests, and the courtyard, maintained by the Garden Club of Charleston, provided the secret garden they were seeking. Due to timing at St. Mary of the Annunciation, the couple opted for a morning ceremony and brunch reception.

Despite the downpours and 57-degree weather that plagued last Memorial Day weekend, which did send the reception indoors, it was a joyous occasion. Eliza chose bright, summery, locally grown, and native florals. With a little guidance, her bridesmaids were also decked in a mix of color and flowers. And the family-style Southern brunch served all the hits, including their favorite shrimp and grits recipe. A jazz band played wedding classics and shag standards, a nod to the couple’s annual summer camp shag dance. And the evening was theirs to spend savoring the day.

Top Tips

Say “I do” to brunch.  There are many pros for choosing a brunch-time wedding, including budget, availability, and of course, mimosas. Eliza and Will opted for a family-style brunch, which made it all the more intimate.

• Consider family photos first. Eliza and Will set aside the old tradition that the couple can’t see each other until the ceremony and chose to do all of their photos, including with family, prior to the wedding. They wanted to arrive at the reception before their guests, so that they could personally welcome each one.

• Mix and match thoughtfully. Going with mismatched bridesmaids dresses? Consider having one design component that ties them all together, such as jewelry. The colors should also be reflected in your bouquets as well.
