LOW-DOWN: Shannon’s inspiration board on Pinterest featured low-slung seating, so Gathering recreated that feel with benches and love seats topped with champagne-colored cushions and navy and deep pink pillows.

A STITCH IN TIME: The ring bearer carried a hand-embroidered monogrammed pillow.

IT’S ONLY NATURAL: The moss-draped trees that surround the Cassique golf course served as inspiration for Cheree Berry’s stationery suite from mac & murphy.

BRANCHING OUT: Cheree Berry’s tree motif was carried throughout the wedding’s paper goods.

IN PIECES: The flower girls carried deep pink rose petals in sweetgrass baskets. To reiterate the palette, navy and pink ribbons were tied to the basket handles.

MINI MAIDS: Shannon and Joe’s nieces wore Angela Plank dresses from the Etsy shop Best Little Dress.

WALK THIS WAY: Again inspired by Shannon’s Pinterest board, Gathering covered an arbor with a garden of pink hydrangeas, peonies, and roses.

PALETTE PLAY: Gathering Floral Event + Design tied floral bundles to chairs with navy ribbon to create aisle markers.

MORE FOR LESS: Large blooms like hydrangeas and garden roses provide maximum impact.

WELL WORN: Shannon’s bouquet stood out against her Legends by Romona Keveza gown from Maddison Row.

TRUE LOVE: Four years after they met through mutual friends, Shannon and Joe tied the knot on Cassique at The Kiawah Island Club on May 12, 2012.

BOOGIE NIGHTS: “When creating our wedding we thought of it as a huge party and wanted to make sure that after people saw us get married they'd have an enjoyable evening,” says Shannon.

BE SEATED: Ivory escort cards hung from the branches of two Manzanita trees.

GOLDEN TICKET: Escort cards were printed with gold ink to tie in the gold foil found throughout the rest of the event’s paper goods. The porcelain flowers that were wired to the trees were given out as favors.

CREATIVE THINKING: Guest plucked their escort cards from the branches of Manzanita trees.

PAR FOR THE COURSE: Arnold Palmers were a nod to the South—and the wedding’s golf course location

KEY INGREDIENT: Guests nibbled on roast beef, mini sliders, crab cakes and more from Cassique at The Kiawah Island Club.

SMALL & MIGHTY: Petite purple nerine lilies dotted the centerpieces. While pinks and blues showed up in the florals, other colors and a variety of texture helped to break up the blooms and give the arrangements depth.

TROPICAL INFUSION: Gathering Floral + Event Design tucked surprise blooms—like this hot pink hibiscus—into the centerpieces.

CENTER OF ATTENTION: Shannon loves flowers and chose to work with Gathering in part because florals are a major focus for the event group. “When you walked into the reception space you were welcomed by a garden aroma,” says Gathering’s Mary Ruth Tribble, “and the colors were explosive.”

BRING THE OUTDOORS IN: Make a major statement with branches, like these draped with Spanish moss.

ALL ACCOUNTED FOR The table numbers were pressed into pieces of wood that were supported by white porcelain flowers.

BRANCH OUT: To bring the woodland motif indoors beneath the tent, Gathering Floral + Event Design hung a statement chandelier made of branches.

SOUTHERN TREAT: The three-tiered wedding cake by Wedding Cakes by Jim Smeal featured sweetgrass detailing as a nod to the flower girls’ baskets.

PICTURE PERFECT: “We picked Cassique because of its beautiful backdrop—and the amount of guests it accommodated,” says Shannon.

WAVE GOODBYE: Guests threw pom poms in the wedding’s navy, pink, and gold palette to send the couple off.

Cassique at The Kiawah Island Club

Brooklyn, New York, residents Shannon Barnett and Joe Meland hit it off immediately after being introduced by mutual friends. A year and a half later, the couple made their way to Charleston, Shannon’s lifelong vacation spot, to book a venue (Kiawah Island Golf Resort’s Cassique), wedding planner (Gathering Floral + Event Design), and baker (Wedding Cakes by Jim Smeal), and to buy Shannon’s gown—all before a proposal had occurred. With the logistics in high gear, Joe tended to the formalities while Gathering went with a palette inspired by Shannon’s love of pink. “We combined pink and navy with touches of gold and champagne to keep things formal,” says Gathering’s Mary Ruth Tribble. “We also included moss and wood to tie in the natural colors of Kiawah Island,” she adds. The bride’s verdict? “It was the best night of our lives,” says Shannon. And surely one of the most colorful.
