January 28, 2023/Governor Thomas Bennett House

After four years living apart during their residencies, medical school sweethearts Danielle and Jeff were more than ready to tie the knot. When they began venue hunting in early 2020, however, the world had other plans. First deterred by the pandemic, the couple finally nabbed an October 2022 date at the Governor Thomas Bennett House. Mere days before the wedding, Hurricane Ian was brewing, and the event was on hold once again. Pivoting, the couple gathered a few loved ones in their home city of Philadelphia to toast the would-be wedding weekend.

Luckily, they had Sarah Lillie Designs on their side. For their rescheduled affair, now in late January 2023, the planner helped tansform the previous, pink-heavy palette to something seasonal yet chic. A tent at the historic home was transformed into a gilded winter wonderland. Candelabras, chandeliers, and a mirrored stage and bar lent a glamorous feel, while baby’s breath and hanging roses added lushness and whimsy. Personal touches remained abundant: the couple was married by another medical school friend, exchanged co-written vows, and seated guests via a New York Times crossword puzzle-inspired chart—a nod to one of their favorite shared rituals.

Top Tips

• Play it safe.
Investing in wedding insurance—especially with an original date during hurricane season—was the couple’s saving grace.

• Roll with the punches.
When unforeseen hurdles arose, Danielle and Jeff stayed open and flexible, resulting in celebrations that were all the more memorable and seasonal.

• Let the season guide you.
For the rescheduled January event, Lillie led with winter accents—hot cocoa at the welcome table, faux minks for the bridesmaids, and cozy blankets at each ceremony seat.
