During Liz Eggers’ first week of college in Memphis, Tennessee, a friend introduced her to a handsome junior named Adam Becker. “Our friend said, ‘Oh, you two should meet, you’re both from Kentucky!” she recalls. Seven years later, Adam proposed, and soon after, the couple decided to hold the wedding on Dewees Island, where the Eggers family has a summer house. Just off the coast of Charleston and only accessible by boat, the barrier island is a private residential community—there are no gas stations, restaurants, or grocery stores and only 150 homes—where environmental preservation is a top priority. Staying true to the setting with a low-impact celebration that felt natural and organic was important to Liz, so Calder Clark of Blue Moon Events set about designing an event that was beachy, but not kitschy. “We wanted everything to look like it belonged on Dewees,” says Calder, “so we used a lot of the grays, crisp whites, and striking blues intrinsic to the landscape.” Pontoon boats transported guests from the mainland to the wedding, only the second ever held on the island. After a beachfront ceremony 15 feet from the ocean’s edge—the surf “almost lapped at the guests’ feet!” laughs Calder—the couple strolled with guests to the Huyler House, the island’s private clubhouse and the wedding’s reception location. “It felt like a reunion, so comfortable and laid-back,” says Liz.
