Swatch This! | Build your event around a single element—like this watercolor table linen

“When I saw this swatch, I had to have it,” says Candice Hilse of YOJ Events, adding, “It’s not often you get to play with such a statement fabric.” And Candice, whose design motto tends toward more is more, knows statements. But even so, there’s a strategy when fashioning any event, like this dinner she styled for the Bliss & Bespoke luxury wedding planner workshop at The Cedar Room. “I always pick one critical item as my non-negotiable inspiration piece,” says Candice of her typical game plan. “Sometimes,” she says, “brides fall in love with too many competing concepts, but they have to be okay with breaking up with things that don’t build on their essential item.” Hmm. Is she talking wedding planning ... or marriage advice?

Take a Chance

In a seriously colorful setting, the “safe” seating choice is a plain white dining chair. But you can also go for a contrasting complement, as with these chairs. Candice loved the way the hefty, decorative wooden frames and natural finish offset the tablecloth.
